About
Daniel Pitout (January 6, 1988) is an actor and musician from South Africa. This individual is famous for wearing a fringed mask that covers their entire face.
Known for his stage act as an “outlaw cowboy”, Orville Peck is a deliberately mysterious artist who blends goth, shoegaze, and indie rock into grandiose vocal stylings with imagery inspired by classic country music from the 1950s and ’60s. Performing live with his distinctive mask, Orville Peck both conforms to and challenges conventions about the West through his powerful, melodramatic voice that grounds the music even as it plays into the subtle humor within the song lyrics.
Early Life
Peck was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and spent his childhood and youth there until he turned 15 years old. Being a child, he learned how to play music on his own, performing music on his father’s acoustic guitar and an old Casio keyboard. The young man grew up in the house of a sound engineer; hence, he became a voice-over artist for cartoons and other audio products as a child. Besides ballet dancing that he was practicing for 12 years, he also performed on stage in musicals productions. During his early twenties, Peck went on a national tour for musical productions. In theatre, he has worked both as a professional actor on the West End stage of London and as a dancer. Peck moved to London in 2014 for the foundation degree in acting from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Career
Pony is the debut album of Peck which he made independently and launched in March 2019 in partnership with Sub Pop. He once said that “he wrote, produced and played every instrument he could” during the time that he was composing in a coffee shop and was staying in his parent’s place. In the days before the release of the Pony, perhaps Peck’s insecurity about himself had something to do with his humble stance about being a part of this particular fad.
The songs Dead of Night and Take You Back were among those that Peck performed live on CBC Radio One’s Q program in June. Peck was nominated for the initial longlist of the Polaris Music Prize for his record Pony in June 2019. The debut album of Peck had also been nominated for an award at the Juno Awards of 2020 under the category Alternative Album of the Year.
After the March 2019 release of his debut album on Sub Pop Records, the mysterious singer-songwriter has been recognized by NPR and Billboard, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, Uncut, The Fader, The Bluegrass Situation, and Vogue.
Artistry
It is known that Orville Peck is a person behind Daniel Pitout, a drummer from Canadian punk band Nü Sensae. There was previously some speculation about him being Peck due to their similarity in tattoos and the mentioning of Peck having been in a punk band. Furthermore, Pitout is listed as an ASCAP songwriting member for Orville Peck’s song “Old River” along with several other songs whose titles match those by Peck, such as “Roses Are Falling”.
The name “Orville Peck” is a pseudonym. He is considered “presumably older than 20 and younger than 40”. About why he decided to wear a mask during his performances, he said:
“The only reason I don’t talk about it in depth is not because I’m dodging any questions. I feel like it’s important that people have their own interpretation about it. And I don’t want to put it all out there and define it.”
Awards and nominations
To date, Peck has been awarded 4 prizes out of 18 nominations. In 2020, Peck got “Libera Award Best Breakthrough Artist” and his first studio album, “Pony,” received “Best Country Album” prize. The nomination of Peck’s second studio album, “Bronco,” took place twice: the Polaris Music Prize nominated it for “Album of the Year” while the Juno Awards chose it for “Country Album of the Year.” In 2024, Peck won the GLAAD Award in “GLAAD Vito Russo Award” category for the outstanding contribution of an openly LGBT media professional to making a difference for equality in the LGBT community. Peck is regarded as the cultural LGBT icon that was awarded several times for this achievement.
